This number is always measured in inches in the U.S. and is always measured diagonally. Besides just being common sense, several studies have shown that productivity does really increase with a larger screen. Less scrolling and toggling are obvious reasons why.

The other two main technical criteria to consider are the contrast ratio and brightness. The contrast ratio measures the difference between the darkest black and whitest white that can be produced. Unfortunately there is no universal standard way to measure this, thus comparing numbers between different manufacturers may not be totally accurate. Some companies only make their measurement based on the screen itself, while others take into account the external light in the room. Brightness of a flat panel LCD monitor is the luminous intensity. This is measured in candela per square metre or cd/m2. As you can imagine, the higher the number, the brighter the screen. An important number to consider particularly if your viewing room or area is rather bright.

If your viewing conditions do tend to change quite a bit, for example a brightly lit room to one that is dark, check to see if the flat panel LCD monitor brand you are considering has built in controls for one touch adjusting for these types of conditions.

Lastly, don’t forget to see and compare the warranty coverage for the monitor. Although LCD monitors are quite reliable, a minimum 3 year warranty is recommended to protect you from premature failure.
